SAFE! XXX URGENT!! AZ, Prescott "Yen" Vision Impaired Amer. Bulldog

Here's a very handsome bulldog mix in Arizona who is looking for rescue!!!

My name is Carrie Hester, and I am the New Hope/Foster Care Coordinator for Yavapai Humane Society in Prescott, Az. We have a 2 year old American Bulldog Mix who is visually impaired. We believe he can see shadows and shapes, but we aren’t sure. I am doing everything I can think of to get his story out there.

This dog is loving and friend...ly in spite of his limited vision. Yen came to us as a stray and it has since become apparent that he can only see shadows and shapes. He showed no reaction to a slow approach of another dog a few inches away through the fence and seemed to be primarily using his sense of smell, continuing to search all around his face. His demeanor has changed since he first came, from being reactive to staff entering his kennel to backing up and avoiding, and now is warm, social and loving to those he is familiar with. As seen in his terrific video, when meeting with a friendly dog, Yen reacts excitedly and wags his tail the duration of the visit through the barrier! He sits on command and will chase the shape of a ball too. As Yen continues to warm up and get accustomed to his surroundings, you can see more of his fun and sweet personality! He is a great pet for that patient, devoted someone who understands visually impaired dogs and can provide Yen with a safe, predictable environment. Please read about him and see his video.

When we did a temperament test on Yen, if we brought another dog right up to the fence to him he got reactive, but when it was from a distance he was fine. Probably because he couldn’t see them. He isn’t neutered yet, but he would be before he left us. He came in to us as a stray, so we don’t know if he is housebroken. He is a very nervous boy(he looks worried all the time), so I don’t think young children would be a good idea, but older children would most likely be OK. We have estimated his age at 2 years old. He is super sweet to people! He alternates between pulling on a leash and staying so close to you that he becomes a tripping hazard.

He is safe here for now, but I honestly don’t know for how long. We do not have a PTS date for him as of yet.

SAFE!! TX, Thorndale "Connor" Blind Border Collie/PBT X **Needs Adopter**

"Conner"

***Needs forever home still, contact Pound Puppies below if interested in adopting***

Conner is a 2 year old neutered male border collie and pit bull or American bulldog mix who was adopted out by Charlyne's Pound Puppies in Thorndale, TX to a young man in the Thorndale area about a year and a half ago. Unfortunately, during that time Conner was bitten in the face by a snake and is now almost completely blind. The family was unable to take care of him properly, and Conner was returned to the group.

Now he needs an understanding home that can help him adjust to being blind. Conner is still struggling with basic things like not running into walls even when his handler tries to provide oral and physical cues. He is a happy, loving dog with people, but he has developed difficulties with some other dogs since losing his sight. Conner will run into other dogs, which some think is aggressive, and he is uncomfortable with very active dogs trying to solicit play. Unfortunately, Conner has always been an outside dog, so he needs training on being indoors. However, he should be indoors for his safety.

When Conner is comfortable he actually behaves like a sighted dog outdoors though. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMVms6s6FFw

SAFE!! SC, Myrtle Beach "Misty" Blind Albino Boston Terrier **Blind Rescue Wanted**

"Misty"

Misty is estimated to be 1 1/2 years old. she is new to being blind, so she is timid. She is not aggressive at all. She is learning to use her other senses. She was dumped here at Two by Two Rescue and we have no experience in dealing with her special needs and currently have 30 other dogs in our care. Our vet thinks she lost her sight due to sudden retinal degeneration.

CO, Divide "Tootsie" Blind Senior Staffie **Furever Home Wanted**

"Tootsie" - Pet ID: Tootsie

Our beautiful Tootsie is now approx 10yr old SF in need of a special home, for Tootsie is BLIND. As sweet as could be, Tootsie was abandoned shortly after the Denver ban was announced - left tied to the door of a shelter, Tootsie was the first Denver dog to come to Mariah's Promise in February 2005. As a result of two vet's exams, it appears that Tootsie's blindness is partially due to a head trauma. In February 2007, Tootsie's left eye was removed due to Glycoma. She is fully recovered and doing GREAT!!!!! Whatever was done to Tootsie did not deter her love for people - so typical of this amazing breed! Tootsie is not comfortable around other dogs, so she would need to be an only child. Teenagers only in the home and probably wouldn't do well with cats. Regardless, Tootsie is a very happy, social, sweet, loving girl who proudly shows off her stuffed animals. Only the BEST OF HOMES would deserve this treasure of a girl!!! If you can provide Tootsie a loving, responsible family, please let us know. A background check, home visit and experience with blind dogs a must!

SAFE!!XXX URGENT!! IN, Franklin "Kiah"Part. Blind/Deaf Senior Cattle Dog

This beautiful senior girl is Kiah! She is at Johnson County Animal Control in Franklin, IN, and she is desperate for rescue.... She only wants a warm blanket to lay on!

I am contacting you today about an URGENT rescue need that we have. Unfortunately, we have been getting in several senior dogs and haven't had luck placing them. We are hopeful that you will be able to assist us! We do not charge a pull fee and will do whatever possible to help with transportation. This is an extremely urgent rescue!

Kiah is a 10 year old female, Australian Cattle Dog that came to our facility as a stray. She is current on her Dappv and Bordetella. She is a sweet girl, but unfortunately Kiah has failing eyesight and is hard of hearing. Although Kiah is neither completely blind nor deaf, she does struggle with both of them greatly. Kiah also has a large growth on her side, we are unsure what the growth is from. Time is of the most essence with poor Kiah!! She has been her way too long and needs a rescue desperately!! Kiah has a wonderful personality. She is extremely mellow and laid back. She is an older girl that just wants a nice rug to spend the rest of her days on. She truly seems to enjoy just laying down on a blanket and chewing on a pig ear or bone. A real sweetheart!!

If you are able to help Kiah please let us know. If you find that you can't help her, please feel free to send her information on to others!

Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon!

ABOUT ME: This is Mystery.....poor sweet girl has been impounded twice, this time they said 'keep her'. There was some mention that during the day they kept her in the garage. And, the shelter is very difficult, her other senses are on overload. She is obedient, inquisitive and affectionate.

Shelter Info:
DO NOT call and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.

For more information on adopting, please visit our website: urgentdeathrowdogs.org and click on “How You Can Help.” There are also helpful links with information on each main album description.

SAFE!! XXX URGENT!!! VA, Fredricksburg "Cash" Blind/Deaf Lab X

"CASH" - #841

Black male Lab - blind and hearing impaired/deaf - about 2 years old - about 45 pounds - Spotsylvania County Animal Shelter (Fredericksburg, VA)

Cash is a young (about two years old) black Lab who is blind and either hearing impaired or deaf. He was running into the walls when he first got to the shelter, and the shelter workers have to stomp on the floor to get him to follow them. They also have to hold his food up to him when they feed him, since he can't see the food and doesn't seem to hear the bowl. One of the volunteers who took pics of him, though, said he was responding to her voice. (It's rough and kind of low, since she smokes.) So, Cash may just be deaf to certain tones. Cash was an owner surrender to the shelter. His original owner gave him to a couple, but they couldn't deal with his handicaps and turned him over to the shelter after only having him for a week. They didn't even fill out any paperwork on him when they turned him in, so the shelter has no history on him. Cash is very sweet and friendly and just wants to be loved on. He is also very playful. No aggression has been seen with him while he's been at the shelter. Cash's left front leg either has a birth defect or an old injury that never healed correctly. He gets around fine, though, and doesn't favor the leg at all. (When he gets excited, he jumps up and lands on it with no problem.) The shelter doesn't know Cash's history with other dogs, cats, or kids since the owners didn't give any info when they turned him in.

I saw him wandering and could not get him (late at night and dark dark dark and woody area). he was picked up by someone 2 days later and taken to our kill shelter. SAFE!! URGENT!! TX, Troy "Tank" 1 Eyed/Blind Labrador **Loves Swimming**

He was a very talented dog and successfully completed retriever training and became a seasoned hunting dog. After completing his training Tank began losing vision in one of his eyes and was eventually diagnosed with a degenerative disease common in labs that is genetic. (We don’t know what it’s called.) Tank had one of his eyes removed and the hope was that the other eye would not be affected, although it is now clear that very soon Tank will lose all of his vision. He is about 5-6 years old and a wonderful dog. He has a lot of energy because of his pedigree as a field bread Labrador, but has spent most of his life with a family as a pet. He is also very intelligent and I believe that with the right kind of training he could be taught to be very independent and functional after he loses all of his site. The client that owns this dog has a large family with 3 small children under the age of five. As Tank has begun to lose his sight he has begun to bump into the children and knock them down, or into things causing a few small injuries. Because of this Tanks owner feels that it would be unsafe to bring a completely blind dog back into his home and has asked us to take Tank to our vet to have him euthanized. Tank is not neutered, he is up to date on all vaccinations, he is great with other dogs, he airs and swims with about 20 a day. His owner does not think he likes cats, but they do not have one. He does great with kids other than bumping into them from time to time, and he is house trained. His favorite things in life are to retrieve, he loves swimming, he is off lead obedient, he enjoys the company of other dogs. He is very intelligent and his recall to his name is fantastic, which makes me believe that he could adjust to using his sense of hearing well when he becomes completely blind. I have attached a picture of him running in the field and one of his face. He is a wonderful dog and would make a fantastic pet for someone without small children. Tank has a lot of energy and drive, and I think this will work out well for him when he becomes completely blind. I think he will continue to try to be active and use this drive to acclimate to his blindness and find ways to continue to get around.

A volunteer writes:
Glenda is a well mannered and gracious older dog. She has been kept in mint shape by her owner who unfortunately lost his or her home. Glenda is feminine. She is trim in her salt and pepper suit. Her face is delicate and attractive. She seems to wear eyeliner. All together, Glenda is an elegant female. Glenda is a dream on the leash. She is of course housetrained. At times and mostly when she sits very close to me, Glenda whimpers very softly. More hugs are in order. She is very needy and affectionate. Glenda was clearly a family dog, a pet who was very much liked by her owners and finding herself in a shelter is a major shock to her. Glenda is very docile, obedient and executes orders readily. She is a perfect and proper dog who wants to please her caretaker. Glenda is at the Manhattan Care Center. I hope that soon enough, sweet Glenda will be happy again in the care of a loving master or family.

Shelter Staff made the following comments about this animal:
A volunteer writes: Handsome Piglet waits so patiently in his kennel as other dogs pass him on their way out. He's easy and calm in his kennel and when it is finally his turn he stands up putting his head towards me to be leashed. He is likely housetrained as he took advantage of being outside in every way. Piglet pulls a bit on the leash so will benefit from some training. He ignored all the other dogs we passed, and when a yappy chihuahua kept lunging towards him, he looked, he shrugged (the dog equivalent of a shrug) and kept walking. Nothing fazes this guy! He's calm, keeps his own counsel and simply enjoys exploring his surroundings. Piglet seems a bit confused by the shelter noises, smells and activity and is ready to move into his own home where he can enjoy his human in his quiet way. Be sure to ask to meet our Piglet today.
