SAFE!! PTS DATE ANYTIME!!! NJ, Jersey City "Naples" Senior Mastiff w/Cherry Eye **So Sad**

***Mastiff to Mutts rescued ***

Naples is a senior Neapolitan Mastiff with significant cherry eye who desperately needs to find a new forever home or rescue ASAP!!! She also has kennel cough. Per management she is on eye ointment & will be started on kennel cough treatment. She has received her Distemper & Bordetella vaccines. LHS has no room & her name, as a senior special needs dog, has been brought up for possible euthanasia.

Naples was brought in as a stray to LHS on 6/7/12. Within a week her guardian came in and surrendered her. She is said to be 8-9 years. Her former guardian had her since she was a 8 week old pup. She was also used as a breeding dog, but it seems that in her mature years her owner sadly just lost interest. Even in her current condition Naples is one endearing, social gal! She finds things in life to be joyful about and she has a special way of sharing her joy with everyone around her. As soon as you approach her cage she starts wiggling her entire body in happy anticipation, "Take me, Take me out...Please!". She loves everyone! She still has plenty of spunk and lust for life. She loves to plop down and roll around in the grass outside. She is so social and has a nice touch of silliness to boot!

She definitely needs vetting. Her left eye is quite bad and is always covered in mucousy discharge. She has been exhibiting signs of kennel cough since Saturday and has nasal discharge. I spoke to management today. They stated they were unaware of her symptoms and that they would start her on treatment today. Apparently she is on eye ointment too, but if she is it doesn't seem to be making much of a difference. I'm wondering if there's more going on then just a secondary infection from the cherry eye, like maybe dry eye. Either way she needs a good vet check.

She did great on her behavior eval. She doesn't mind any handling. Aced her stranger, baby doll, and rawhide test. She was a bit uncomfortable with her food being handled, but she only communicated that through submissive body language. She had no interest in toys (she may not know just what toys are for), and approached both tester dogs in a friendly, playful manner.

Her surrender profile stated that she is friendly with children, playful around strangers, sometimes shy, no history of any aggression or bites,& it was checked off that she lived with other animals and got along with other animals but no other details were listed. She was listed as not house trained BUT it also said that she was kept in a garage day & night, as well as regularly left alone for periods longer then 8 hours. So she may just need some help in that department. She does seems to know that she should go outside though.
