URGENT!! QC, Wakefield (Canada) "Kuei" Blind Husky

Name: Kuei
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Siberian Husky
Age: 1 year approximately
Location: Quebec, CD

Vet/Medical Info: On 4/10/2011 Kuei was vaccinated for DHPP and bordetella at the Gatineau SPCA prior to being transferred to Sasha's Den. 5/4/2011 he was taken to their vet for a complete exam. He was HW tested (SNAP 4DX) and was negative and was given his rabies vaccine. Advantage Multi was applied. Eye exam: his right eye is bigger than left. Pressure taken in both eyes: 15 on the left, 18 on the right. That is slightly elevated, but he has no pain associated with it, his eye does not run, his pupil is not dilated and everything else seems normal. He has juvenile cataracts which is the cause of his blindness. Heart, lungs, normal. Bacterial folliculitis. He was put on Novo-Lexin for 2 weeks. Slight Ortolani sign on both hips. He was X-rayed under anesthesia on 5/5/2011 while being neutered and does not have any sign of arthritis and does not have hip dysplasia. This summer he had a urinalysis because he urinates a lot, results were normal including density. He is on HW preventatives and was also dewormed with Safeguard X 5 days.

Owner Info: Kuei is a beautiful blind husky with Qc Rescue, Sasha's Den. Unfortunately, the rescue is experiencing problems with him that make permanent homing a big challenge. Kuei is still not house trained, in spite of the angelic efforts that the foster family (the actual owners of Sasha's Den) have made so far. They have also put together a nice pen for him outside, in which they can't leave him, as he will howl and bark at the least noise. Although Sasha's Den has homed blind dogs in the past, the combination of all of these issues make the situation overwhelming and Kuei would benefit from being undertaken by a specialty rescue. They are not sure if the blindness and incontinence have been caused by seizures or maybe head trauma from his past life as a stray. They have to get up at 6am and take him out at once. He has to go out every 4-5 hours during the day. Placing a blind dog is difficult, placing an un-housetrained blind dog merely impossible, around there at least. Kuei's eyes are brown, clear and wide - it is not obvious he is blind. He has a very sweet disposition. He eats well, has normal stool. He gets along with female dogs, is a little macho with males. Too rough with small dogs, not to be trusted around cats. They can help with transportation, Kuei is located in the Rawdon area, Qc.

VA, Harrisonburg "Branson" Part. Blind Senior Rottie X

My name is Misty Watson and I am the Adoption Facilitator at Rockingham/Harrisonburg SPCA. We have a mixed breed (possible rottweiller mix) that is a senior (aprox 10 yrs old), intact and is partially blind (the vet thinks he can see a little bit out of both eyes, but not much). His name is Branson. He is extremely sweet and loving. He came in very emaciated, could barely stand when he came in. He is putting on weight here, we have been feeding him a little portion every two hours. We would really love to try and get him into a rescue.

PTS DATE 10/4th!! SC, Summerville "Wyatt" Deaf Amer. Bulldog

Hi again,
I am writing again in hope that you may be able to help. Wyatt only has one week left here. I need rescue to confirm before Tuesday, October 4th. He would make the right family complete in every way. He is very smart. Please respond asap.
Thank You!

See below for initial post...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,
My name is Ashley and I am the rescue corridinator at the France R Willis SPCA in Summeville, SC. We have a deaf amercian bulldog mix here named Wyatt. Wyatt is a wonderful, loving teddy bear. He is approx. 1 y old, heartworm negative, neutered, and current on all vaccines and preventions. He is very very smart and has learned many hand signals, including sit, stay, lay and come. He also gives kisses when asked to and knows his name. Because of Wyatts disablility, it has been very difficult to place him in the right home. Not alot of people understand him and his uniquness. Unfortunatley, when an employee spooked him, he bit. It was the only time he has ever done that. There were no severe injuries. I am writing you in hope that you may be able to help our poor Wyatt. He truly is an amazing dog, who has been though so much and still loves with a gentle heart. I have personaly worked with him everyday of his stay here. He is completely house trained. He loves toy ropes. He plays with other dogs like a puppy. He isnt camera shy, and his picture resides on the front of my personal cell phone. I understand him, teaching him everyday. He is very treat motivated, (he loves soft treats.) He is about 50lbs of pluffy love. He has beautiful deep bown eyes and a heart-shaped nose. Please contact me back right away. He is stressed here and needs to be in a place where people can understand his disability and help place him with the right family.
Thank You

FL, Palm Peach Gardens "Mobe" Blind Shih Tzu

Name: Mobe
Sex: Shih Tzu (altered)
Breed: Shih Tzu
Age: Unknown
Location: Palm Beach gardens, FL

Vet/Medical Info: Mobe was neutered 6/14/2008. He received DHPP and Bordetella 1 yr shots and rabies 3 yr shot 9/9/2011 and was also given Frontline, was dewormed and tested HW-. He also had a fecal test and it was negative. Vet noted bilateral ocular opacity (possibly blind) and he has possible peridontal disease and mild dental tartar. He also has a cyst on left side of hip area.

Owner Info: Mobe's owner recently saved him from Miami Dade Animal Services to avoid him being euthanized. His old owners did not want him anymore. It was indicated he had partial blindness and they put him in quarantine board. He had a cataract in one eye and hyphema probably from some blunt force in the other eye, however when this cleared up it was discovered he has cataracts in both eyes and is therefore essentially blind. They seem to be mature but they could potentially be operable to restore sight. He is healthy other than the cataracts, normal size and weight, no food allergies. To complicate this, Mobe’s new owners cat is not taking well to him and is attacking quite viciously, since he is blind he has no idea she is coming after him. She has asked some rescue contacts to find him a temporary foster home but is looking for a rescue who understands special needs dogs and specializes in placing a blind dog. Mobe is very alert and independent and walks well on the leash, even in an area he is unfamiliar with. He also is comfortable enough to walk off leash, if you click your fingers he follows you. He does not act as if he is any different than other dogs and even when he bumps into something he goes right back on his way. Mobe's owner is looking to place him somewhere where he can get the attention he needs as a special needs dog because she can't give this to him. She also worries about his safety with her cat as he does not defend himself and she is too aggressive with him. She realizes she should not have taken him but it was never indicated up front how severe his blindness was and other than his blindness he is healthy and there was no reason for him to be euthanized. She just had to save him. Owner will be taking Mobe to her own vet for glucose tests to determine if the cause for cataracts is diabetes. She will also get the cyst on his hip checked and start him on some supplements and eye drops as a maintenance measure.

XXX URGENT!! TX, Lampasas "Minka" Part. Deaf & Blind Catahoula X

My name is Amanda, and I am with the Lampasas Animal Shelter. We have a little girl here who has sight and hearing impairment. She is about 6 months old, and we are calling her a catahoula mix, although she may have Australian Shepherd or Dalmation in her as well. Her name is Minka (which means strength), and she is a total doll. She went home with one of our volunteers last weekend and we got nothing but good reviews. :-)

I don't think Minka is completely blind or completely deaf, but she is definitely cannot see or hear anywhere near normal. The volunteer who took her home said that she would follow the other dog in the home around and do whatever that dog did, and she whatever that dog did. She didn't bump in to everything, so she must be able to see something. The volunteer said that she believed Minka would respond to both high and low pitched sounds, but not to her voice or clapping.

The volunteers also decided to take her to the vet for a thorough exam, but we haven't gotten the record of what all was done. We'll call tomorrow and get the vet to fax over her paperwork. At a minimum, Minka will have had a DHPPC, Bordatella, wormer, and flea treatment at the time of transport. We can let you know if she had any other vetting after we receive the paperwork.

As you know, Minka's chances of being adopted directly from the shelter are slim, so she is on our critical list. She would make someone a very sweet dog...the volunteer who took her for the weekend said that she is very attentive, so she would be easy to train to hand signals. She was also crated at night and didn't cause a fuss, and did not have any accidents in the house. If you can help us save Minka, please let me know as soon as possible. If you know of any other groups that I may have missed that could possibly help her, please feel free to share. :-)

Thank you so much,
Amanda Gilbert

SAFE!! URGENT!! NV, Pahrump "Mickey" Blind ACD

This cutie is Mickey! Mickey is in the Nye County Animal Shelter in Pahrump, Nevada, and he is looking for rescue...
From our shelter contact:

I am a volunteer with the Nye County Animal Shelter in Pahrump, NV. I was asked by the supervisor to email you these pictures of Mickey, our blind, 3 year old Australian Cattle Dog (Queensland Heeler as they're referred to in these parts)

Mickey was turned into the shelter on September 19th as an owner surrender. We were not told that he was blind. Another volunteer, who adores him, realized it after he was at the shelter for a few days. She fostered him over the weekend and he did beautifully. He's very sweet and affectionate, housebroken, walks on leash, good with everyone (2-legged and 4-legged) and he adapts well.

Thank you so much,

Jackie

He is really sweet and doesn't even flinch when touched unexpectedly. He is housebroken and gets along well with other dogs. He is confused about his surroundings and doesn't know why he is there, but he seems to be handling it well under the circumstances. He weighs around 20 lbs. He is the perfect size for inside. Please help this guy. The number to the shelter is 775-751-7020.

SAFE!! XXX URGENT!! OH, Mansfield "Samson" Blind Mastiff

Meet Samson...he wandered onto a porch and the homeowners called the dog warden to come get him. He is big, big guy who at first we thought was both deaf and blind but now we think he is just blind. He seems to be able to hear. He is of course disoriented and doesn't know where he is but he is very sweet. He is breaking our hearts and we are desperate to find him some help. He is horribly thin so who knows what his story is. Please, please help this big guy...

SAFE!!URGENT!! NY, Manhattan "Frankie" Deaf PBT X

Special Needs

MACC

FRANKIE - ID#A911489 *DEAF*

I am an unaltered male, white and black Pit ...Bull Terrier mix.
The shelter staff think I am about 2 years old.
I weigh 48 pounds.
I was found in NY 10451.
I have been at the shelter since Sep 21, 2011.

A volunteer writes:
I am usually not so "taken" by white dogs or cats but Frankie is different. He is a wiggely worm in his cage , his tail wagging like a window wiper in heavy rain. I would expect this super elegant all white boy with aqua marine eyes to be less of a clown..... When I say all white... wrong...he has a black ring at the base of his tail....Frankie does not seem to hear but he responds well to hand and body commands. He is a pretty good walker and is most likely housetrained. Frankie is so excited to see other dogs, mostly those his size. He wants so much to play. Frankie does not understand that the shelter is not a doggie playground.. Even sign language would not reason Frankie... Frankie is quite a sweet boy. We can offer him at least human companionship. He is a good trooper and settles for a run after the ball, petting and hugging. Frankie is a stunning dog. Being most likely deaf, he needs a savvy owner who will not regret taking home such a great companion. Frankie is at the Manhattan shelter, waiting for his forever family.

XXX URGENT!! TX, Houston "Sarafina" Blind PBT

UPDATE 12/03/11:  Sarafina is currently being fostered, but urgently needs a new home.  Please continue to share her story.

UPDATE 10/09/11 - Sarafina now has a $100.00 sponsorship available to a reputable rescue who pulls her.

I am a volunteer at Alvin Animal Control near Houston. We are a small municipal shelter managed by the local police department. I am contacting you today about one of the dogs in the shelter named Sarafina. She came to the shelter with a damaged left eye and we tried entropian surgery to repair it, but it did not work so the vet removed the eye. She did fine for about 2 weeks and then she began running into things and we noticed a "white cloud" in her pupil. We took her to a specialist who used an ultrasound to determine that Sarafina has a deformed lens and a cataract in her only eye. He gave us drops to keep her eye dilated and sent us home. In the bright sunlight, like we have down here in Texas, she is almost completely blind. She is slightly better in low light situations.

Sarafina is 1 year old -- 35 lbs -- spayed -- heartworm negative. Here is her video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SgS1HfmYho

This is a high-kill shelter and we need to find a safe place for Sarafina. There are only 2 volunteers at this shelter and we are trying to save so many dogs.

Thank you.

SAFE!! XXX URGENT!! NM, Los Lunas Great Dane X Deaf & Eye issues

This beautiful puppy was brought in as a stray. He is only about 3 months old ( looks like he is 6 months but he still has all his baby teeth ) completely deaf and can't see very well either. He needs out ASAP. Because of his problems it is not fair to keep him in a shelter situation very long and we probably won't be able to keep him much past Wednesday the 28th. He is a very sweet boy and loves attention. I'm not sure what kind of dog he is, my best guess is a Great Dane mix because of how big he is for a 3 month old puppy. If anyone can help get him into a rescue please contact me anytime.

SAFE!! XXX URGENT!! MO, Kansas City "Mara" Blind Tabby

Mara

Tabby - Brown/Tabby - White Mix: An adoptable cat in Kansas City, MO

Medium • Adult • Female

This cute girl is blind but as sweet as can be! She is friendly and likes to be held.

This kitty is SUPER SWEET! But is either blind or has diminished sight. But she'll get around fine in a house and will be a loyal, loving companion. She's only $45 to adopt - includes all vetting! Stop in and see her at the KCMO Shelter, 4400 Raytown Rd, Kansas City, MO 64129.

she is 5 yrs old...DOB 9/13/2006 she is currently spayed, she is NOT declawed (yay!), she was an owner surrender...

I spent quite a lot of time with her yesterday, and she seems to only see things that are right in front of her. she still ran into things though too, so it's hard to say. our vet isn't going to care enough to figure it out. I would guess it is neurological because her eyes look normal, except that they glow much more when light hits them. no sign of trauma, deformity, cataracts.

KY, Dryridge "Bruno" Blind Anatolian Shepherd

Name: Bruno
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Anatolian Shepherd
Age: 9 years
Location: Dry Ridge, KY

Vet/Medical Info: Bruno is neutered. He was last seen by the vet in Dec. 2010. They have never administered any vaccinations to him or tested him for heartworm. They saw him for a weakness in his hind leg and sudden onset blindness.
Owner Info: DOB 10/18/2002. Bruno's owners are moving to Romania for around 7 years due to a job transfer. They will be leaving in Jan/Feb 2012 and would like for Bruno to be settled into a new home before they go. They rescued Bruno when he was around 2 months old from their local shelter. Bruno literally when blind overnight about a year ago, he was diagnosed with SARDS. Bruno is on a raw diet and takes Dinovite as a pet supplement. He is a bit weak in the back left leg due to an ACL injury 5 years ago. Bruno is good with kids, good with other dogs and cats, very friendly, goes up to people and smells them and then leaves them. He is an inside dog with the run of the house, he’s housebroken and leash trained. Bruno's family thought about taking him with them but have been advised that the transport would be too stressful for him. It was recommended to them by several people they not take him. Bruno is a wonderful family dog who thinks he is a lap dog and is faithful and loyal. He lets their 2 year old grandson climb on him and use him as a step to get on the couch.

Contact Info:

and put in subject line "Bruno" if interested

AZ, Phoenix "Pearl" Gorgeous, Partially Deaf Dog

This is sweet Pearl. Took her in as a stray out in Hidden Valley. She is approx 10mos old – 35lbs. She does seem to have some hearing (lower sounds as opposed to high pitched whistles) I have had her spayed (and a pregnancy terminated) & vaccinated (I have all records.) I am willing to chip her as well. I don't have an appropriate foster home placement for her and unfortunately, she's getting very little interaction here at my home because of the c-section mama & her babies as well as the other rescues currently here. She's living in her kennel about 21 hours/day and it's breaking my heart. She is great with other dogs – small and large. She's young & a little "crazy" when she just gets out of her kennel but she has the potential to be a phenomenal dog. If anyone knows a rescue or possible placement willing to take her in & follow through on her adoption to a new family, I would greatly appreciate it. No reimbursement for vet care requested. I just want her to get a good placement. Thanks for considering Pearl!
