CA, Glendale: "Oreo", Blind GSD mix

Please meet Oreo, a blind and very, very frightened and lonely GSD mix in Glendale, CA....living at a Pet Hospital...

An owner turned in Oreo, a GSD mix, female, spayed, about 3 1/2 years old. She has recently gone blind (about 6 months ago), they think from cataracts. Oreo is frightened of loud noises and if they take her out and she hears traffic, she gets upset. She's very sweet, has shown no aggression, but is skittish. Oreo needs someone with a lot of time and energy. She has never really been around other dogs, but they think she'll be fine.
Poor Oreo cowers when touched and getting her in and out of her crate is stressful for her. She needs to be carried, and weighs about 40 - 45 pounds. She curls up into a ball in her crate. The hospital is very busy and Tom can only spend about 5 minutes a day with her, so she has very little people time. Tom really believes she'll make someone with time a wonderful pet, she just needs some work. They are extremely grateful for anything we can do for Oreo.

These dogs are both deaf and blind, they have been raised with this woman since birth (someone dumped a pregnant mom) of course she couldn't find adopters for deaf/blind dogs. She has also not had steady income so they are current on Rabies, but not altered. They are on their way to the Waco kill shelter in 8 days if a home can't be found. She has lost her job, and has to relocate and unfortunatley can't afford to take them. Please share we can arrange transport if we can find a place for these boys (one is not good with other males).

URGENT!!! NJ, Trenton Blind Senior GSD

He was picked up as a stray and doesn't understand what's going on....he's quite handsome!

From the ACO Trenton:
Here are a few pictures of the dog we discussed. He was calmer this afternoon, but still growls when approached.
We have no name for him. He is around 8 we think...possibly older.

He looks like a shepherd mix of some kind. Not sure what the mix is.

As I said, he growls when approached & I'm sure it's because he is totally unfamiliar with his environment. Has not tried to bite or lunge at anyone.

Health issues....probably. I know for sure he has missing & bad teeth.

No idea how he is with other dogs or cats. I would imagine he is defensive.

I can see cataracts in both eyes so that would be the cause of his blindness.

Does not appear to be neutered.

We found him wandering around on the Capital Health Center, Mercer Hospital Campus here in Trenton & were able to bring him in without any difficulty.

The shelter number of 609-989-3254 will be good also. We are open 8-4 Monday thru Friday.
Because of space problems, he can be rescued at any time.

Thanks for your help & interest. If you need anything else, please let me know.

SAFE!! WV, Buchannon Blind Blue Tick & seeing eye dog

these two where brought in yesterday to the shelter. the Blue tick hound is a very sad story he is completely blind. the pup with him helps him through the kennel it seems. the pup doesn't leave his side. both are males

--
The pup is so sweet. In the one picture he is nuzzling under the chin of his blind companion. How can such a young soul be so attuned to his companion's needs? Truly these two need to be saved together....please.

Info on the two: Other then the Blue Tick being blind they seem to be in pretty good health. The pup could use a little weight. Both have been given a DHPP and dewormed. A gentleman said they came to his house as strays. Both entered the shelter Monday the 25th and will be ready for adoption or rescue on Saturday the 30th. Space is always an issue so the sooner we could get these two moved the better. They do seem to be pretty bonded and the pup seems to help the Blue Tick navigate around the shelter. Both have very sweet personalities. They have been fine with the other dogs here.

We do have some transport help. We do not transport into PA, If someone from PA wants the dogs then they would have to make their own arrangements past WV. We usually have transports that go through Hagerstown MD.

NC, Durham "Sydney" Deaf Aussie

She needs a foster/adoption asap! Can you please help? (watch her video at the bottom)

Sydney ARPH #12590 is the epitome of Joie de vivre! Joy of life. Sydney is a very active young dog. Her birthday is August 5. Sydney was brought into ARPH as a purebred but is likely a mix, possibly Border Collie. Her owners claimed they bought Syd from a breeder who refused to take her back when it was discovered that Sydney was deaf. Sydney proved to be too much for her new people as they were first time dog owners. Hence she was turned in to a shelter. Sydney has blossomed in her foster home!

THE GOOD: Sydney is now completely house trained and knows how to use a dog door. Sydney knows “come” by hand signs and light training. Her recall is wonderful! She also knows the signs for, her name, sit, and tries very hard to “stay.” Syd is fine with other dogs and with dog savvy cats. She is smart and learns quickly. Syd is very soft mouthed when it comes to taking treats or being groomed (which she does not like). Syd also likes water and is great at bath time. She LOVES toys of all kinds. Tug is her favorite game. She loves to retrieve balls and Frisbees. She is agile and fast! Sydney can jump and turn on a dime! Standard baby gates equal an agility course! Could fly ball or agility be in your future? Her favorite toy is the Kong, which can also be used to “pacify” her when being crated. She’s fine on car rides and fine with dog savvy cats, but she does like to chase them. Syd is just okay on the leash but needs work. Sydney is very velcro and wants to be with humans. Her nickname is Potty Pal!

THE BAD: Since Sydney is deaf, her barks and yowls are strange (common with deaf dogs). Sydney does not do well with small children. They frighten her, and she reacts by herding them with barks and yowls. The noises frighten the children even more. So kids over 12 only. Sydney will go to her crate but does not like to be left there if she knows people are around and will yowl. She settles down with the help of a stuffed Kong and sleeps in her crate with no problems. Syd is still learning not to put her paws on humans. She has some quirky habits. She can be very insistent and sometimes willful. When she wants to play, she will nip at your heels and hands. A very firm stance and the sign “NO” will deter her. Sydney is a bit of a counter surfer and will steal food if given the chance. She loves to steal the dish towels and pot holders (makes for a merry game of chase for her). She is still very much a puppy who needs to be treated as such. As with any deaf dog, Sydney will require a fenced yard.

Sydney’s former owners bought a lifetime, transferable training package with a group called “The Bark Stops Here,” which will be transferred to her new foster or forever home.

As foster home of 12 years of both deaf and hearing dogs, I can say Sydney is a keeper. She is a diamond in the rough! If not for her aversion to small children she would stay here. We have grandkids, which are frequent visitors, are 8, 5 and 1. There isn’t much kid free time here. Sydney is a great gal who needs a chance.

Sydney is fostered in Durham, NC.

SAFE!! URGENT!! GA, McDonough: "Zeb", Blind Choc. Lab/Shepherd mix

Zeb is so fabulous. He is HUGE, a big teddy bear of a boy. Zeb is completely blind but he gets around wonderfully. He has adjusted to his handicap and navigates like nobodies business! He is so very awesome.

Zeb is neutered and really fabulous. When you talk to him the tail goes non stop and he follows your voice bobbing his head back and forth to feel his way along walls, furniture, etc.

He is such an amazing dog I could not let him die here without a fight. His owner was contacted. He said he would come in and pay the eutho fee, he does not want him back. That's all this living souls life is worth?

I am sickened.

Please help save him.

XXX URGENT!! OH, Akron "Bella" Senior Cocker

UPDATE:
I sent you an email about this older cocker spaniel back in March when she was rescued off a chain. She has been being fostered in a loving home in Akron, but the landlord just found out about her, and it's a big no-no. We need to find a new foster home for her or a forever home as quickly as possible. She is about ten years old, vetted, has a sweet disposition; gets along with kids and other dogs. She is partly blind and hard of hearing. I am attaching a photo. Do you know of a foster home that might take her? If not, would you please crosspost? Her name is Bella.
am a freelance writer for the Cleveland Pets Examiner. Last week, a college student in Akron Ohio contacted me about a cocker spaniel that was chained in the yard next door to her and that was in "bad shape". She said that the man who was caring for the dog kept trying to get her or her roommate to take her. He said he is moving in 30 days and he will leave her behind. I contacted the group Dogs Deserve Better, based out of PA. They have a rep in our area, and today the rep went out to rescue the dog off of the chain. We were pretty sure that we had a foster/possible adopter lined up for her. None of us knew that Bella was blind until the DDB rep spent some time with her. Now the foster/adopter has backed out. We need to find a rescue that can take her, or someone who can foster her, and we need to find that safe haven immediately. The DDB rep cannot keep her in her apt. because of landlord restrictions. We are networking on facebook and have lots of groups crossposting. The Ohio cocker rescue we contacted is full. Do you know of any blind dog rescue groups in Ohio? or Special Needs Dogs rescue groups? Any info you could provide would be very helpful, and if you have a facebook page and can post this info, it would be very much appreciated. (my fb contact is below.) Picture of Bella attached.

SAFE!!MN, Detroit Lakes: "Frank", Visually Impaired Labrador Retriever

Please read below about Frank an almost blind yellow labrador retriever. He is the product of a puppy mill so he is considered a dwarf breed. Frank has been at the shelter for a while. Actually his information was sent to me and I had sent some questions back to Rachel at the shelter. Then a day later a message was sent that there was a pending adoption so he didn't get posted out. Well now everything has fallen thru for this poor boy and Rachel has gotten back in touch with us to ask if we can post him out to everyone. Please look at this pictures and read the below information. Also, please share Frank's information with any of your contacts as he is in need of getting out of the shelter and placed in a forever home.

Description: Hi there! My name is Frank! I came into the Humane Society as a stray. I was found in a snow bank on a very cold day. I have been on my own for a while now. I have poor eyesight so if I am somewhere new I will run into things until I know my way around. I use my nose more now since my sight isn't all there. I am a very sweet dog. The sound of your voice gets me all excited and I will wag my tail happily. I like to be near you and get attention. I like to have a rawhide of my own to keep me busy. I get along with children and some other dogs. I know how to sit and I am housebroken. I have been down a pretty rough road over the last few months, so I would love to find a family to become a part of. I can?t wait to meet you and I hope to be moving into my new home today!

Other: Frank is considered a dwarf breed. He has issues with his joints and will have arthritis when he is older. He has poor eyesight and will run into things if he is not familiar with his surroundings. Surgery may be an option in the future, but will require a medical specialist. Frank is a sweet heart of a dog who will need extra tender loving care throughout his life, as he will have medical issues and need frequent medical attention.

SAFE!!PA, York "Helen" Blind/Deaf Senior St. Bernard

Helen, is a small St Bernard mix that is blind and deaf. She has the face of a St B but is a very small girl. She is FAT right now. She is older, but not sure how old. I think she might have lyme. She is also so very sweet. I walked her past a young Doberman and she didn’t care when it sniffed her.

I have a strange feeling she was dumped. Helen was found laying in the middle of the road

PA, York "Fast Eddie" Blind in left eye Spaniel X

Fast Eddie looks like a spaniel mix. Don’t know his age, but will just say he is a little old man. He has some lumps on his chest but they felt squishy, so I think they are fatty ones. He is wobbly on his back legs, so I think there is something up with that. It could be just that he is old and/or arthritic. His wee wee sticks out all the time. Sorry, don’t know how else to describe that :-) He is ever so sweet. I think he might possibly see something out his right eye, but not his left. He seemed to react to my hand on the right side, but not certain. He is extremely urgent. He is in the garage and there is no A/C in there and they are going to have to euth this week if no help for him.

PA, Penn. "Kiwi" Cocker w cherry eye

Kiwi is an adorable 3-5 year old cocker spaniel that was surrendered by his owners because they no longer have time to care for him. He’s a good boy that gets excited to meet new people and will jump and give wiggly tail wags to show his appreciation of attention. His former owners said that he is housebroken and has lived with older children as well as dogs and cats! Kiwi is a fun loving guy that deserves a chance at another home! He is in need of a grooming and needs to have his cherry eye fixed, but Kiwi will make a wonderful companion to the right family!

PA, Penn. "Butch" Senior Cocker w cloudy eyes

Butch (13637352)

Butch is a stray senior Cocker Spaniel that was found under a van on one of our recent 100 degree days! This poor old guy is stressed in the shelter and needs rescue ASAP! He has awful teeth, cloudy eyes, possible ear infections and some fatty masses on his belly. He’s an independent guy that is more than content just lying by your feet. He greets other dogs politely, but probably prefers a canine companion that won’t want to romp and play. Butch seems to be housebroken and seems to be happiest when he's out for a stroll!
